What phantom load is
Phantom load, standby power, vampire power and always-on load all describe the same thing: electricity a device draws while it appears to be off or is doing nothing useful. It keeps a clock running, listens for a remote, holds a network connection, keeps a transformer energized or maintains a battery at full charge.
Individually the amounts are tiny, measured in single watts. But watts running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, add up in a way that is easy to underestimate. The rule that makes this concrete:
The one-watt rule: 1 watt running continuously uses 8.76 kWh a year, which costs about $1.61 a year at 18.34¢ per kWh. So a device drawing 10 W in standby costs about $16.07 a year, and 25 W costs about $40.16.
Once you have that rule, the whole topic becomes a sorting exercise: find the devices above about 5 W and deal with them; ignore everything below 1 W.
Typical standby draws
These are representative ranges measured with plug-in meters across common household devices. Exact figures vary by model and age; newer devices are generally better because of efficiency regulations that came in through the 2010s.

Finding yours
Feel for warmth. A power brick or a device that is warm while "off" is drawing several watts. Cold means near zero.
Use a plug-in meter. A Kill A Watt style meter costs about $25 and reads standby draw directly. Leave it on each suspect device for a minute. The measuring guide covers this in detail.
Read your meter at night. With everything in the house "off" and the fridge between cycles, watch the smart meter or the utility app's hourly usage. Many homes idle at 100 to 300 W at 3 am; that is the always-on floor, and it includes the fridge, router, and every standby draw combined. Subtract the fridge's average (about 60 W for a modern one) and the router, and what is left is phantom load.
Check the utility app. Some utilities and smart thermostats now show "always-on" usage as a line item, computed from the overnight minimum. It is a reasonable estimate.
What to do about it
The effective fixes, roughly in order of payoff for the effort:
- Change settings first. Game consoles, TVs and streaming devices nearly all have an eco or energy-saving standby mode that cuts the draw by 90%. It costs a slower start-up and nothing else.
- Put the TV rack on one switched power strip. TV, soundbar, console, streaming box and cable box all off with one switch. A smart strip that senses when the TV turns off and cuts the peripherals automates it.
- Hibernate the desktop. Sleep keeps RAM powered; hibernate writes it to disk and draws about 1 W. Monitors and powered speakers on the same strip.
- Unplug the second fridge. Not phantom load strictly, but the same category of "always on and forgotten." An empty garage fridge is the single most common $150-a-year waste in American homes.
- Leave the small stuff alone. Chargers, toothbrush bases, clocks and smart speakers each cost less than $5 a year. Unplugging them daily is a hobby, not a saving.
Keeping it in proportion
A thorough phantom-load cleanup typically saves 30 to 60 W of continuous draw, which is $48.20 to $96.40 a year at the national average rate. That is real money for an hour's work, but it is also less than a single month of running a space heater.
